In only the second time in 100 years, the Royal Mint deviated from Pistrucci's familiar depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. 2002 was Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee year and to celebrate this, the Royal Mint revived the shield design, last seen 115 years prior. It was in 1887 that the last shield sovereign was produced, in Queen Victoria's Jubilee year.
Back in 2002, the issue limit for the uncirculated bullion version was quoted as being 100,000 and 12,500 for the proof version. However, the Royal Mint website quotes the actual mintage figure for the uncirculated bullion version as being just 75,264 pieces.
The obverse face of the 2002 sovereign uses the design by Ian Rank-Broadley, first seen in 1998. His initials can be seen below the truncation. The reverse design by Timothy Noad depicts a crowned shield of the Royal Arms, with a surround of laurel leaves, tied neatly at the bottom with ribbon. Noad's initials, can be seen at the edge of the laurel leaves at about the 4 o-clock position.
