The Ottowa Mint produced sovereigns for just 10 years, from 1908 to 1919. It was set up to coin the gold that had been recently discovered in British Columbia and following the Klondike gold rush. The Ottowa mint produced sovereigns on request from the Royal Mint in London and were usually for export purposes. All Canadian mint sovereigns are scarce and many years are very rare. The 1908 Canadia sovereign is the rarest with only 633 pieces minted.
Today, the Ottowa Mint is known as the Ottowa branch of the Royal Canadian Mint
All Canadian mint sovereigns can be identified by the small letter 'C' which appears just above the date on the reverse side of the coin.
